Sargeant X Comrade are back with a brand new single “Old Familiar Feelin'” being released on April 04th 2025. This timeless jazzy lo-fi soul/nu jazz piece touches on a universal feeling that everyone who has ever loved and lost can relate to. This track features Colin Adhikary on drums and Juno winner Daniel Neva on acoustic bass. Just like always, Sargeant X Comrade bring you something new, yet something that sounds very familiar. Reminiscent of Billie Holiday, Yolanda’s vocals on this track make it very clear why she is referred to as the “Queen of Lo-Fi Soul”

From the artist:
“Have you ever invested so much energy into making something work, only to look back and see you’re exactly where you started? Despite hoping for a different outcome, you’re left with the same sense of brokenness when things fall short. Yet, somehow, in that space, there’s a strange comfort—like the familiarity offers some kind of peace.”
– Yolanda Sargeant

TRACK BPM: 72
GENRES: Nu Jazz, Neo Soul, Soul, RnB
Sounds like: Billie Holiday, Erykah Badu
MAPL – 100%

Track is CLEAN and RADIO FRIENDLY

Pre-Save Link

SXC BIO:

Yolanda Sargeant is the Queen of Lo-Fi Soul. A genre that she and her producer Comrade(Evgeniy) pioneered after not being able to find an appropriate label that fits their eclectic style. The duo infuses jazz, soul, funk, dancehall, hip-hop, as well as other genres into a unique sound that combines the old with the new.

MORE SXC NEWS:

Sargeant X Comrade are doing a Western Canada Tour and releasing a brand new album “Power” late April/early May. This song is the first single from that album and is sure to catch the ears of even the most selective music aficionados.

Brand new music video featuring Prevail(from Swollen Members). This one is epic and is one of the most creative/psychedelic videos you will see this year. Directed by Italian film-maker Gino Bikovesso. WATCH ON YOUTUBE

True Geneus), via Mo Gravy Records.

The Candian tour will bring the duo first to Jasper on April 12, after which they’ll perform in Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver, before concluding the trek on May 8 in Salt Spring Island. This run is said to represent “Phase 1,” which could mean more tour dates in the rest of the country this summer. Stay tuned for more details on that.

Bikovesso shared of the video in a release:

What is real? It is a query as old as time. From Plato’s Cave to Keanu Reeves movies, the human species has contemplated and attempted to explain reality for as long as we have been around. This video is a homage to this age old question and how we perceive what is real. Are we ready for the truth? The physical world may just turn out to be a collective hallucination or a very sophisticated computer simulation. We may never know. Whether you approach it from a more spiritual side or your views are based around science and logic, it is becoming apparent that there is something more behind our physical realm, hidden in the ethos, just out of reach for us to fully grasp and comprehend.

Watch the video for that below, where you’ll also find the duo’s tour schedule.

Mo Gravy Records is sharing the first single from late Calgary musician Marvin “The Fly” Kee’s album with his collective, Flytrap, set for release later this year.

As a bass and guitar player in a long list of bands spanning a myriad of genres, from soul to flamenco and funk to punk, Kee was a notable figure in Alberta’s music scene since he started performing with the legendary High Rollers in the late 1980s. He passed away in March of 2023.

Before Kee’s passing, he was recording a new collaborative album under the Flytrap
moniker. The brainchild of Kee, Flytrap’s Weapon of Mass Creation LP features a cast of different characters from across Calgary’s funk, soul, and jazz scenes, including soulful vocalists Yolanda Sargeant (Sargeant X Comrade), Amy Lee Owens, Sammy Jean, and Chenelle Roberts, producer Evgeniy aka Comrade, trumpet and keyboard player Ravi Poliah, saxophonist Scott Morin, and others. Composed by Kee, the album’s lead single, “Can U Dig It?”, is an instrumental track infused with the cinematic energy and soul that he adored. With Kee’s sly guitar, bass, and keyboard riffs on display, it’s a truly lethal elixir of groove.

“Marvin loved movies – exploitation films, samurai films, any wonky ‘70s-era film with a funky soundtrack. You can hear that influence all over this instrumental track,” said Scott Morin, a friend of Kee’s who was associate producer and saxophonist on the album. “‘Can U Dig It?’ has the sort of dirty, soulful funk vibe that you might hear in a Blaxploitation film during the driving scene where the PI is trailing the suspect. I would describe the Flytrap project as like the Broken Social Scene of funk groups. It has had a rotating roster of musicians and collaborators, all from the funk, soul, and jazz scenes, with Marvin at the helm. Most of the tracks on the Flytrap album will have vocalists, but we wanted the first single to be this instrumental track as it really spoke to Marvin and his artistic statement. We all knew when he got sick, and it put more of the onus on us to help see his vision through. We wanted to create a legacy piece for him and are now working with the blessing of his family to make sure this album is completed with the care and love that Marvin would have given it.”

Mo Gravy records head and album producer Evgeniy aka Comrade added, “We are
honoured and excited to be able to release Marvin’s music to the world. It’s not a task to be taken lightly. We are working very hard to make sure that the music is completed and presented in a way that reflects the true Flytrap funk style and aesthetic that he worked so hard to achieve. Marvin’s creative and inventive spirit is still very much present in this city through the many contributions he made to the music scene, the countless lives he touched, and the people he inspired.”

STREAM NEW TRACK “CAN U DIG IT?” HERE

The first single from the Weapon of Mass Creation LP arrives ahead of a mini-music
festival in Kee’s honour, Snow Melter Presents: Flyfest – A Musical Tribute to Marvin “The Fly” Kee, presented by Music Mile, Mo Gravy Records, and the Inglewood Business Improvement Area. The musical event (April 27th) brought together many of Kee’s musical collaborators and friends to perform live in his honour, including Sargeant X Comrade, La Mosca, Deicha & The VuDudes, and The Ex-Boyfriends. The day will begin with an unveiling of a mural by artist Alex Kwong, which captures the vibrant venues of Calgary’s Music Mile and an unforgettable denizen who played them, Marvin Kee.

More about Marvin “The Fly” Kee:
Marvin Kee was a Calgary music scene mainstay, having played many of the city’s
venues with a slew of bands, starting as a guitarist with Funkadelic-inspired The
Highrollers, who built a reputation for its spectacular, jaw-dropping stage performances. Unafraid to experiment with genres, Kee would later join genre-melding worldbeat outfit Los Morenos as bassist, performing hundreds of shows with them over 20 years. In addition to leading his own flamenco group, La Mosca, and the soul-funk project, Flytrap, Kee played with a long list of Calgary bands, including Sargeant X Comrade, The Torchettes, The Ex-Boyfriends, Deicha & The VuDudes, Blist, Venetian Blinds, and more. He also spent many years performing with the Indigenous-led theatre company, Making Treaty 7. In 2016, Kee was ‘white-hatted’ for his contribution to the music and culture of the city of Calgary.

More about Mo Gravy Records:
Mo Gravy Records exists to provide listeners with some of that soulful goodness and a touch of sophistication and class.

Published on December 16, 2021 at https://readrange.com/sargeant-x-comrade-interview/

In the fast moving musical landscape of today where old-school doesn’t always retain the same freshness or cultural cache that it once did, Calgary-based duo Sargeant X Comrade are committed to blowing the dust off what came before them while bridging the gap between old and new.

Vocalist Yolanda Sargeant’s contemporary and dynamic soulful stylings collide with producer Jay Bykovets’ lifelong love of old-school hip-hop, but Sargeant X Comrade are pulling much more than old styles into a modern context on new album, The Elephant In The Room. Legendary figures like the late Gift of Gab of Blackalicious fame intermingle with rising talents on their features list, while familiar classics are repurposed with updated lyrics.

In the past, the duo has collaborated with other hip-hop stalwarts like Kool Keith and Planet Asia, paying homage to their personal heroes. “These days, the old school cats get forgotten pretty quickly, it’s more of a throwaway culture,” Bykovets says. “They’re the ones who paved the way, and we think we need to show respect.”

Combining familiar voices with local talent like Edmonton rapper K-Riz and Shampane Di Topbanga keep the duo’s message of bridging cultural and generational gaps alive with an eclectic mix of soul, jazz, boom-bap, dancehall, and even a little opera — all adorned with a dusty vintage crackle. “It might be a sound that you’ve heard, but then we remix it in our own way,” Sargeant says. “Duke Ellington says that one day there’s going to be a time when there’s no genre. If you start to think outside the box, you realize that everything is a box. But we just want to be free.

The outsider perspective to their craft might have something to do with their origin stories starting on opposite sides of the world; Sargeant has Caribbean heritage, while Bykovets was born in Russia. Over the phone, Bykovets is calm and precise as he explains his musical methods. Sargeant, on the other hand, often catches herself wondering whether she’s revealing too much, interspersing her rapid-fire brainwaves with an infectious cackle and freestyle raps about Babar the Elephant. But when a topic excites them, they end up finishing each other’s sentences.

Sargeant in particular values an all-inclusive musical mixture to celebrate and reclaim the nagging sensation of feeling like an outsider that has followed her throughout her musical journey. Part of a touring children’s choir from an early age, she recalls being put down by peers after gaining the confidence to get up on stage. Her later interest in punk rock meant she often found herself receiving quizzical stares as the only person of colour in the room. “We try to stay positive and push a message of unity, and people waking up to see the value within themselves,” she says. “I think that’s what’s lacking today.”

Much of what makes Sargeant X Comrade’s music so refreshing is their somewhat unstructured and intimate approach, many of their tracks feel like an on-the-spot effortless jam session about whatever was on their minds that day – something that Bykovets refers to as “the magic.” To add to this magic, Bykovets enjoys scouring for unexpected samples to build around. Many still possess a personal twist. He names the score of a 1960s Soviet movie and encrypted radio transmissions from the Cold War era as some of his favourite discoveries to pop up on this latest project.

Sergeant X Comrade also give a modern-day lyrical update to Gil Scott-Heron’s legendary “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” the rap pioneer’s message still ringing true today. The album’s title, The Elephant in the Room, ultimately becomes twofold – not only does it refer to the social issues that get swept under the rug, but both Sargeant and Bykovets report having felt like the famously ignored elephant themselves, dedicating their work to all the other elephants listening. “There’s a lot of elephants out there,” Bykovets says with a chuckle. “So many people feel so alone, but if you feel like you’re the only elephant, there are ‘elephants’ in the room,” Sargeant adds.

Regardless of what kind of elephant you are, Sargeant X Comrade hope that their work helps you to find your herd.
